RETIREES CORNER
November 5, 2004
The next Retirees’ luncheon will be held at noon on November 17th at the Elks Club, on Springtown Blvd. The speaker will be Lily Pang from UCOP on "Latest Health Plan Changes." Retirees should have received their open enrollment packets in late October or early November. If you did not, contact the health care facilitator at the Lab.

Margy Odell wants someone to help her arrange the Retirees’ Travel Group programs for January through June, 2005, and then take over the chairmanship the following year. She has been the chairman for over 10 years and thinks it’s time for a change. If you would like to help, send an email message to SlideShows@LLNLRetirees.org.

We have been notified by the Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that there will be a meeting in San Francisco tentatively on December 13-15, 2004, at the Westin St. Francis. There will be an evening pubic comment session, but the exact date and time is not available at this time. If you wish further information, please check their web site at: www.cdc.gov/niosh/ocas.

Many retirees are unaware that they can get an East Avenue Corridor badge that is good for one year. With this badge they can get to the LLESA store and activities in Bldg. 415.

Community Service Opportunity: Bob Hickman and others (including some Lab retirees) serve middle-to-low income elderly people in the tri-valley area through the AARP/IRS TaxAide Program.  It is time for new participants to sign up so there is adequate time for training before February.  Unlike most volunteer activities, many people cannot do this job.  Working at one of the sites takes approximately 4 hours per week from Feb 1st to Apr 15th.  If you are interested, please send an email to volunteers@LLNLRetirees.org.

Waldo Magnuson (Electronics Engineering, 1990) lives in a log home on the north side of Spokane, Washington.  He and his wife Barbie (retired from Livermore School District also in 1990) were to take their first cruise in October.  The cruise was on a LST out of Campbell River, B.C. and visited fishing and logging villages along the coast for five days.  Waldo (Skip to many) finally got his Ham license (W7WGM) and is trying to come up to speed working CW on 40 meters.  He has been refurbishing vacuum tube radios for several years (mostly Zenith Trans-oceanic and Hallicrafters "boat anchors").  His ham station contains several of these "glow-in-the-dark" units.  He is still active in flying and flies his Beechcraft Bonanza and Cessna 140 (rebuilt from a wreck).

Marian and David Holten (Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, 1990 & 1991) vacationed the entire month of July in their travel trailer at an RV park nestled on the banks of the Little Blackfoot River near the very small town of Garrison, Montana. They were joined by three of their daughters and families for a 10-day period. Activities included exploring Lewis and Clark country as well as restored mining towns (Phillipsburg and Virginia City) and preserved ghost towns (Garnet and Granite) both examples of the rich mining history of Montana. The group enjoyed excursions to Butte and Helena for guided tours, as well as hiking, picnicking, and fishing. Later in the month, they were joined by trailering buddies Owen Parker (Mechanical Engineering, 2001) and Sharon and for more exploration. The Parkers continued on to John Day, Oregon to visit former neighbors. Linda Schlinger (Electronics Engineering, 1997) flew in to Missoula and drove out to join the foursome to begin her Montana adventure continuing on to Polson (Flathead Lake) and Glacier Lodge.

Please send any news or input (please include the date and department from which you retired) to Jane or Gus Olson. E-Mail: Jane@LLNLRetirees.org or Gus@LLNLRetirees.org.
