Retirees’ Corner
April 2007

Sam Perone (Chemistry & Materials Science, 1989) has published his fourth and fifth novels. Just published Judgment Day (late 2006) is a political thriller delving into a possible White House conspiracy to provoke a preemptive nuclear strike at Iran. Murder Almighty (2005) is a Vatican thriller where conspiracy and murder rock the conclave of cardinals selecting a new Pope in Rome. Reviews have been very good. Early readers claim that Judgment Day reads like "tomorrow’s headlines." Murder Almighty was a finalist for a ForeWord Magazine 2005 Book of the Year Award. The books are being marketed online (barnesandnoble.com, etc.), and signed copies can be purchased through the author’s website (www.samperone.com). Judgment Day features settings in San Francisco and California’s North Coast, while Sam’s first book (The StarSight Project) features the Livermore Valley and Livermore Lab.

Richard Sites (ME 1998) and Mary Sites (Lasers 2000) remarried March 8, in Maui, Hawaii.  They will reside in Pleasanton. Richard is working part time with PAO at the Discovery Center and most recently at the Science Fair.  Mary continues to volunteer at the blood drives.

Several retirees including writers Jack Russ, Hector Timourian and Camille Minichino have discovered the Tri-Valley Branch of the California Writers Club.  Formed in 2005, the active and growing club welcomes writers of all genres, published and unpublished.  Meetings are held monthly.

The next Retirees’ Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, April 18th, at the Elks Lodge in Livermore. The speaker will be Len Alexander, executive director of the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center, will speak to LLNL retirees on "Bringing World Class Theater to the Valley."  Len has held senior management positions in both non-for-profit and commercial performing arts companies.  He has produced music, theater and dance events in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

LLNL Retirees may want to mark June 20 on their calendars for the annual Retirees Picnic at Ravenswood Historical Park in Livermore.  For those who haven't joined us in the past, the Picnic is one of the most enjoyable events of the year.  It's too early to sign up – the reservation notice will be sent out in May -- but we wanted to give you early notice for planning ahead.

The Travel Group will meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month January thru June at 2:00 p.m. in the Livermore Police Community Room. The April 24th topic is “Cambodia: Angkor Wat and Beyond” by Steve Massey. The May 22nd meeting topic is: “Cruising French Polynesia” by John Stroud.

Please send any news or input (please include the date and department from which you retired) to Jane or Gus Olson. E-Mail: Jane@LLNLRetirees.org or Gus@LLNLRetirees.org.
