Retirees’
Corner
July 2007
Evelyn Heald (Mechanical Engineering/Physics, 1993) and Joyce Brooks spent three
weeks in Eastern and Western Europe. The first three days were in the
charming “Old Town” of Prague in the Czech Republic
and from there an adventurous 7-1/2 hour train ride to the beautiful
city of Budapest,
Hungary. They loved Budapest and would like to return for a more
prolonged visit there. Upon arriving in Budapest
they took a river boat cruise tour from there to Amsterdam, went through 68 lochs, and met
some great people, 12 of which were from California
and a third generation couple from Israel. Three of the many highlights of the trip were
attending a concert in Vienna
which consisted of Mozart and Strauss music as well as singing and dancing; our
visit to the 900-year-old Benedictine monastery in Melk (never saw so much gold
in one church) and seeing the originals of Rembrandt and Vermeer paintings
in the Amsterdam
museum.

The July Retirees’
Luncheon will be held at noon
on Wednesday, July 18th, at the Elks Lodge in Livermore:
Which features will
change and which will stay the same for retirees on Oct. 1 when a new contract
takes effect and LLNL becomes Lawrence Livermore National Security? How can retirees keep up with changes as they
occur? Start the process of finding out
on July 18 by joining the Retirees Association at its regular luncheon meeting. The picture may not be entirely clear by
then, since the new contractor’s benefits plan may still be under review in Washington, but our two
expert speakers will tell us what is known at this point, and they will map out
the remaining process. They are Judy
Ackerhalt, project director for human resources/benefits transition planning
for UC’s Office of the President, and Lynn Soderstrom of the
LLNS transition team. Their offices
are working overtime to get ready for the contract change, so join us and learn
the latest!
Gus
and Jane Olson have been doing the Retirees’ Corner for over four years now and
are ready for a change. They would like
to give some other retiree the opportunity to take on this job. The only requirement would be that you have a
computer and e-mail. Perhaps someone who
is retiring soon would enjoy this volunteer job. If you are interested, please send them an
email at Jane@llnlretirees.org or Gus@llnlretirees.org
to find out what the job involves.
Please
send any input to Jane or Gus Olson.
E-Mail: Jane@llnlretirees.org
