Retirees’ Corner
October 2007

Grace Caluwe wrote the Retirees’ Corner a nice “thank you” note in August. She commented on how she enjoyed her fifteen years in Personnel. Her husband, Frank Caluwe, who died in 1973, started the apprenticeship program at the Lab. She has done much traveling to Canada, within the USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Norway, Sweden as well as Brittan and Scotland. She had going by rail and stayed in many B&B’s in England and Scotland. She enjoys hearing about people that she worked with like Nort and Linda Croft and others. She sees Hank McDonald walking the Iron Horse Trail in Danville.

Marian and David Holten have joined the ranks of volunteers in the Reno/Sparks area in an effort to “give back to the community”. In 2000, Marian completed training through the Washoe County Family Court system to serve as a court-appointed Special Advocate for Elders (SAFE). In this endeavor, Marian accepts assignment to an individual who is under the jurisdiction of either a private or public guardianship. As an advocate, she works closely with a case manager to monitor for the Court, what is in the best interests for the elder’s optimum physical, mental, and financial welfare. This effort also includes developing a trusting relationship with the individual concerned through weekly visits. David joined a group of volunteers with the Renown Medical Center, the region’s largest hospital. His group is comprised of retired people from various careers as well as pre-medical and college students. Their duties include discharging patients, transferring files, delivering flowers, training new volunteers, and various office tasks. He looks forward to working two 5-hour shifts each week The Holtens will interrupt their volunteer time in September to tour Rome and cruise the Greek Isles.

Ron Carr (Mech. Engr, 1993) and his wife Donna drove to St. George Utah this summer for two weeks of golfing.  After St. George they visited the Grand Canyon and Tucson, Arizona.  While in Tucson they played golf and had dinner with Ernie Dragon (Mech. Engr.) and his wife Joanie.  The Dragon’s live in a beautiful senior’s development and are members of three country clubs.  Ron and Donna have an upcoming two month trip to Europe.  They plan to visit Croatia for two weeks and then fly to Athens for four days.  From Athens they will board a cruise ship that sails back to San Juan PR.  The cruise ship has stops in Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Cyprus, Rhodes, Crete, Barcelona, Canary Islands, and some Caribbean Islands.

The Presidential yacht, the USS Potomac, now berthed at Jack London Square, has had a varied history, to say the least.  Chosen by FDR, it was sold by Harry Truman, owned by Elvis Presley, used as a drug runner, and sunk in San Francisco Bay.  Join LLNL Retirees at their regular luncheon on October 17 for a fascinating talk by USS Potomac docent Stuart Profitt to learn more about the history of this bigger-than-life yacht, including how Profitt came to be married on it, and about San Francisco Bay

The October 16th Retiree luncheon will be held as usual at the Elk's Lodge in Livermore, 940 Larkspur Drive, across from the Springtown Golf Club.  Food will be served at noon.  Price is $17, payable at the door. Reservations necessary and can be made on this web site.

Margy O’Dell is looking for people to put on a show for the Travel Group. She needs some younger retirees who are busily traveling the world. Contact her via e-mail at: trips@llnlretirees.org.

New Chairperson Needed:  Jeff Garberson, who has served as Retirees Association chair for three years, has announced that this is his final year.  For the Retirees Association to continue in 2008, we need a new leader.  Time is short to finalize plans for the coming year, so please contact Jeff at: chair@llnlretirees.org promptly if you can do the job (or if two of you are willing to share it.)

Please send any input to Gus and Jane Olson, e-mail: Gus@LLNLretirees.org or Jane@LLNLRetirees.org.
