February
2007 Cruise News
Not much to
report this month and no photos. I started back to work at Windsong Designs late this month. It is strange making
Christmas ornaments in February but that is when the orders start coming in from
our retail stores. I continue to make beaded jewelry and have designed a
new line called Aurora Borealis. I was pleasantly surprised to sell all
the jewelry I've made this winter to the gift shops at the Sitka airport and the
Raptor Center. It will be interesting to see if the tourists think as much
of the jewelry as the gift shop owner/managers.
Chuck is still
picking away at his winter "to do" list. He fabricated, fiberglassed and gelcoated a new
shelf in the engine room which will allow him to get more organized down
there. He is midway in building a small table for the pilothouse and
reworked the wiring from the engine room up to the boat deck to operate the
winches for the dinghy lift. We have 12 batteries ordered for the boat and
they will be delivered in about a week. Chuck has about two weeks work
installing and rewiring the new battery banks. And.... there are the
unscheduled "to dos" that come up more often than we would like. The Ports
and Harbor Commission meetings have kept him busy also.
Seiners from the lower
states are starting to show up for the herring roe fishery which will take
place in two or three weeks. Activities around the commercial boats has
started to pick up with people starting to prepare their boats for a busy season
of fishing. A few hardy souls are getting out looking for winter
kings with a few being taken. At $10 a pound, it is a worthwhile endeavor
although a dangerous one with the temperatures in the low teens. The
boats come back into port covered with ice from the freezing
spray.
We hope all is
well with everyone and that you are looking forward to summer as much as we
are.
