June 2007 Cruise News

from Craig, Prince of Wales Island:
Hi
Everybody:
We
cannot believe June is over already. Unfortunately, we didn't start this
year's cruising until very, very late June.....like
the 28th. We left for what we thought would be most of the summer twice
in late May and early June but both times had to return to Sitka to replace
inoperable equipment and make major repairs. We won't go into detail, but
our bank account is greatly diminished. Welcome to the world of
boating. The fortunate thing about having to spend a good deal of time in
Sitka during the summer is that we can see our friends from the lower 48
who come up here in their boats.
We
finally left Sitka
for the 3rd time and it seems to have been the charm. No problems
encountered at least thus far (which is only a very few days). As
planned, we headed down the west coast of Baranof Island and out into the "big
ocean".

We
anchored in Yamani Cove in Necker Bay for a few nights and then, deeper into Necker Bay in Dorothy Cove for a night.
Yamani Cove was delightful especially since the sun was shining.

Up at
the head of Necker
Bay are some pretty
spectacular waterfalls.

In
Dorothy Cove we thought we were going to be visited by a deer but he came
close to the boat and decided that was not what he wanted to do.

Across
from Dorothy Cove is a small anchorage called Toy Harbor.
We discovered this operating tide level indicator. As you can see we
got there at a minus tide. Just outside the photo perched in a bush is
a solar panel that provides power for a transponder which is the box on the
tripod behind the measuring rod. Interesting place to put this device.

Unfortunately,
this is where we have to leave you. That is all we can report for the few
short days we were out in June. At this point, we haven't seen any bear
or whales but we will. Until next month...
